The Napoleon Museum in Portoferraio

Along the Salita Napoleone – the road that leads from the historical centre of Portoferraio to Palazzina dei Mulini – one can stop by the Museo della Misericordia, a small collection that displays objects from the Napoleonic age. The majority of the objects in the Museo Napoleonico della Misericordia are part of a donation made in 1852 by Anatole Demidoff, the husband of Napoleon’s niece, Matilde Bonaparte and a great admirer of Napoleonic history

On view in the museum’s three rooms are engravings, objects and relics, including an old Elba flag. Especially worthy of note, in addition to the reproduction of Napoleon’s sarcophagus in Les Invalides, are the mortuary mask of the Emperor taken from the cast made on Saint Helena by his personal physician, Antommarchi, and the cast of the Emperor’s hand donated by the Armée of Paris. Also displayed in the museum are a sculpture by Tino da Camaino, documents and religious objects collected over the course of the history of the Arciconfraternita della Misericordia (Archconfraternity of the Misericordia), which was founded in 1566.
