The Camposanto of Pisa and Lasinio’s engravings

Gli affreschi dell'Orcagna nel Camposanto di Pisa in un incisione di Carlo Lasinio
Gli affreschi dell'Orcagna nel Camposanto di Pisa in un incisione di Carlo Lasinio

The Camposanto Monumentale was built in 1277 in the extraordinary Piazza del Duomo in Pisa. Starting in the fourteenth century and continuing throughout the fifteenth, this quadrangular building was frescoed with major pictorial cycles. At the beginning of the nineteenth century and further to the Napoleonic suppressions, the Camposanto became one of the first public museums in Europe, housing the majority of works coming from the suppressed churches and monasteries. Carlo Lasinio, Keeper of the Camposanto in Pisa from 1807, was responsible for the reorganization and arrangement of the works, in other words for the transformation of the collection into a public museum, dedicated to the memory of Pisan art and culture.
In October 1812, Lasinio, appointed by the French government, was in charge of organizing the transport of some of the celebrated Medieval works from the Camposanto collection to Paris, chosen for the Napoleonic museum by its director, Dominique Vivant Denon.
During these same years, the first edition of Pitture a fresco del Campo Santo di Pisa, disegnate e intagliate da Carlo Lasinio Conservatore del medesimo (Fresco Paintings of the Camposanto in Pisa, drawn and engraved by Carlo Lasinio, Keeper of same) was printed at the copperplate engraving and printing works Molini e Landi, belonging to the man of letters Giovanni Rosini, in Florence. One year later (8 February 1813) the Grand Duchess Élisa visited Rossini’s printing works, and was pleasantly struck by Lasinio’s engraved plates.
An exemplar of the work, which comprises forty etched plates and carries the great merit of documenting the original frescos in the early nineteenth century, already in a serious state of deterioration, is kept in the University Library of Pisa.
